hew! We've had such a jam packed week and I'm really proud of our class for accomplishing so much this week!
READING: We've been reading more content related articles in class, with not much time for personal choice reading. Yesterday we read for Storyline and today we read for Science, with some comprehension questions to answer verbally with partners and as a whole group.
When we come back in January, I will be testing students reading fluency using the Developmental Reading Assessments (DRAs) I spoke of at conferences.
WRITING: Most students have almost completed typing their final draft, which I'm so proud of them for getting done! I have emailed some parents their compositions started in class, so they can be finished tonight and turned in tomorrow. Students should complete their final draft or rough draft in lieu of writing reading summaries in their homework.
When we return from the break, we will be starting our "How tos" writing unit. Students will develop skills in giving detailed instructions, as well as have an authentic purpose and audience.
MATH: In my class, we've moved onto place value and I've been pulling a few lessons from the Bridges curriculum. We started this week exploring base 10, but using a modified base 4 model. Bijal's class is working on multiplication and logic puzzles, while Michael's class is completing a long division unit. They just took an assessment today.
SCIENCE: We conducted two science experiments this week: one testing which objects are magnetic and today testing whether or not magnets would still have a magnetic field of attraction through water. We'll continue with magnet exploration when we come back. One of our upcoming projects will be creating our own compasses.
STORYLINE: Tomorrow will be the last day of our Storyline unit. This week we had a visit from a "union representative (played by Kieran)," and in my class we decided on whether we're joining the union, not joining or quitting and finding new jobs. For our closing day, we'll be looking at conditions in factories then and now to look for the comparison between conditions in the industrial revolution versus factories in other countries.
EXTRAS: Tomorrow is our white elephant gift exchange. If your child wants to receive a gift, they must also bring a WRAPPED gift. These are generally gag type gifts.
Look for upcoming news on community service projects and a 4/5 science fair in the next coming months after break.
I want to thank everyone for their support of our classroom and of your children. I am so proud of each and everyone of them for the growth I have seen academically and socially. I'm grateful to work with such an amazing group of children with so much spirit, kindness and determination.
Happy Holidays!
