Hello families!
Since I missed last week's, I figured I would just start sending out the emails at the beginning of the week as a preview to what we'll be doing that week.
READING: Amy Curtis helped me so much by administering some of our Developmental Reading Assessments. These are the oral reading tests that we set student goals for at conferences. I will be completing the other half of the assessments during reading this week.
Additionally, we will be focusing on making inferences in our reading as I've noticed in the homework practice that this is a skill we need work on.
SCIENCE: Our goal this week is to write the steps of our science experiments, decide how we will record our observations (example: journal entries, drawing pictures of the changes, taking pictures, taking video, measuring, etc.) and also the materials needed. That way students have a guide to follow when they actually conduct the experiments at home. Students/families will have the first three weeks of February (Feb. 2-20) to conduct the experiments and record observations AT HOME. Homework packets will be modified to allow time for students to do their experiments. Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have questions about the project.
The science fair is scheduled for Wednesday, March 18 in the MPR from 6-7:30 p.m. More information about judging and criteria for display boards to follow in the next coming weeks.
WRITING: We are practicing our How-To procedural writing by creating mini books with instructions about how to get out and return laptops from our Lower School mobile lab. This was in response to some trouble some students have had returning school materials properly. We will be reading our mini books to Kyle's 2/3 class sometime this week after our books are done.
SOCIAL STUDIES: Last week we started talking about Martin Luther King Jr. In the next couple weeks we will be studying more about our local hero for Black History Month and creating an informational biographical pamphlet to put in the outside display case. I'd like to do some various readers theaters on some African American heroes so stay tuned for dates on when you can come watch our reader's theater performances!
EXTRAS: No school this Friday or next Monday for grading day and planning day. Report cards will be mailed home roughly the second or third week of February.
